Iraq's al-Sadr visits church, site of 2010 attack

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr reached out to Iraq's religious minorities Friday, visiting a Baghdad church desecrated in a deadly 2010 attack as well as a prominent Sunni mosque as public opposition spread against his rival, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

The anti-U.S. cleric's stops at the holy sites ? a rare public appearance by al-Sadr outside predominantly Shiite parts of Iraq ? came as tens of thousands of primarily Sunni protesters angry over perceived second-class treatment rallied to maintain pressure against al-Maliki's Shiite-led government.

Friday's demonstrations reached well beyond the desert province of Anbar that has been the hub of two weeks of unrest, touching a string of Sunni-dominated communities in Iraq's north and west. Cries of "Down, down with al-Maliki" echoed in the streets of the northern city of Mosul, while protesters in the capital Baghdad accused the prime minister of being a liar.

The government has tried to appease the demonstrators by agreeing this week to release some detainees, bowing at least in part to one of their more emotionally charged demands. But that gesture has done little to stem their rage.

In a statement Friday, the prime minister urged government security forces to show restraint toward protesters. He also called on demonstrators to avoid acts of civil disobedience and warned them that "foreign agendas" seek to push Iraq toward sectarian conflict again.

Al-Sadr, who has voiced support for the protesters, appears to be trying to capitalize on the political turmoil by attempting to portray himself as a unifying figure ahead of provincial elections in the spring. He spoke up for the Sunni protesters' right to demonstrate earlier this week, and echoed that sentiment again Friday.

"We support the demands of the people, but I urge them to safeguard Iraq's unity," he said.

Wearing his signature black cloak and turban, the cleric said he visited the Our Lady of Salvation church to express sorrow at the attack and send a message of peace to Iraq's dwindling Christian community, which is estimated to number about 400,000 to 600,000.

He sat quietly in the front pew, listening and nodding as Father Ayssar al-Yas described recent renovations to the church. The priest then led al-Sadr on a tour, pointing out places where attackers in 2010 killed priests and worshippers in an ambush during Mass. More than 50 died in the attack, blamed on Sunni extremists.

Al-Maliki himself attended a ceremony to officially reopen the church last month.

Al-Sadr's visit took place at a time of rising sectarian tensions a year after the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. Al-Sadr grudgingly backed fellow Shiite al-Maliki following elections in 2010. But last year he joined Iraq's minority Sunni Arabs and Kurds in calling for al-Maliki to resign.

Al-Sadr rose to prominence as the leader of a militia movement that battled American forces following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, and he has in recent years made overtures to Sunnis and others. But fighters loyal to him were among the worst perpetrators of sectarian violence last decade, and he is still viewed with hostility or suspicion by many Iraqis.

After visiting the church, al-Sadr's heavily protected convoy made its way to the Abdul-Qadir al-Gailani mosque, one of Baghdad's most prominent Sunni places of worship, shortly before midday Friday prayers.

As he entered the mosque, one worshipper called out that he is "the unifier of Sunnis and Shiites." Another hailed him as "the patriot, the patriot." Women in the courtyard ululated and showered him with candy on the way out.

Protesters, meanwhile, massed in several Sunni areas around the country.

The demonstrations appeared to be some of the largest in a wave of rallies over the past two weeks that erupted following the arrest of bodyguards assigned to Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi, one of the central government's most senior Sunni officials.

The detention of female prisoners has been a focus of the demonstrations, though the protests tap into deeper Sunni feelings of perceived discrimination and unfair application of laws against their sect by al-Maliki's government.

Iraqi authorities this week ordered the release of 11 women facing criminal charges and pledged to transfer other women prisoners to jails in their home provinces in a nod to protesters' demands.

But demonstrators Friday continued to press for more prisoners to be released.

Several thousand people rallied amid tight security in the courtyard of Baghdad's Abu Hanifa mosque after midday prayers. They demanded the release of detainees, and held banners with slogans against the perceived politicization of the judiciary. They also called for an end to corruption.

Their chants included: "Iran out!" ? a reference to what many Iraqis see as their neighbor's influence over the government ? and "Nouri al-Maliki is a liar."

Local TV broadcast what appeared to be tens of thousands of protesters massed along a highway near the western city of Ramadi, which has been the focus of demonstrations and sit-ins in recent weeks. Large crowds also converged on a stretch of the same highway near Fallujah.

About 3,000 people gathered in the northern city of Mosul, where they called for the release of female prisoners and to end to what they say are random arrests of Sunnis. Among their chants were: "Down, down with al-Maliki" and "No to sectarianism."

In the ethnically mixed city of Kirkuk, about 1,000 protested to demand the release of Sunni detainees.

Protests were also reported in other areas, including the Sunni stronghold of Tikrit, the hometown of former dictator Saddam Hussein.

Northern Irish police injured as flag row turns violent again

BELFAST (Reuters) - Eight police officers were injured in Northern Ireland on Thursday when protests at the removal of the British flag from Belfast City Hall turned violent for the first time in more than two weeks.

Pro-British loyalists began rioting and fighting street battles with police after a decision a month ago by mostly nationalist pro-Irish councillors to end the century-old tradition of flying the British flag from City Hall every day in the British-controlled province.

More than 40 police officers were injured in the initial wave of violence, which stopped over Christmas. Protesters took to the streets in recent days but had remained peaceful until Thursday, when the community divisions were exposed once more.

At least 3,600 people were killed during Northern Ireland's darkest period as Catholic nationalists seeking union with Ireland fought British security forces and mainly Protestant loyalists determined to remain part of the United Kingdom.

Missiles, including petrol bombs, rained down on police in the Mountpottinger area of Belfast, a loyalist stronghold that borders the only Catholic enclave in the east of the city. A burning barricade was also used to block a major route into the city centre and a nearby car was set on fire.

Police said a crowd of around 100, some in masks and waving British flags, were involved in the unrest that lasted for several hours and led to two arrests.

Almost 50 rioters have been charged so far, the youngest a boy of 11, after deeming the vote to only fly the Union flag on 17 specified days a year - such as Queen Elizabeth's birthday - as a step too far in the ebbing away of Protestant dominance.

The protests marred a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who travelled to Belfast last month to lend her support to a 15-year-old peace process that helped mostly end three decades of sectarian bloodshed.

Another rally outside City Hall has been scheduled for Saturday and organisers say the demonstrations will continue until the flag is restored to the City Hall roof.

The now regular weekend rallies have mostly remained peaceful but disrupted pre-Christmas trade in Belfast city centre shops.

Asus Laptops and Desktops to Ship With Leap - Technology Review

A device that makes it possible to control a computer with fluid midair finger motions will be bundled with some PCs from Taiwanese company Asus in coming months. The distribution deal is the most significant move yet by startup company Leap Motion to distribute its first product, which allows desktop software to respond to swipes, pokes, and grabs made in front of a screen (see ?Leaping Into the Gesture-Controlled Era?).

The deal will see Leap Motion?s sensors and software packaged with some ?high-end? laptops and PCs. The bundled products will appear in the first quarter of 2013, says Leap, around the same time the standalone Leap Motion device, priced at $70, is due to begin shipping.

Michael Buckwald, Leap Motion?s cofounder and CEO, says Asus agreed to use his company?s technology because it believes new ideas are necessary in the PC market. ?They, like us, believe this will revolutionize interaction on the PC platform,? says Buckwald.

Depending on how the deal with Asus works out, it could result in many more people being exposed to the novel way of controlling a computer. ?We?ll be watching closely to see what they do with it,? says Buckwald.

Buckwald says the Leap?s technology allows for more natural computer interaction than a touch screen or a computer mouse. ?It?s much more intuitive because you don?t have to remember a new sign language,? he says. ?Someone can reach out as they would in the real world.?

The software preinstalled on the Asus PCs will allow a person to control Windows 8 using finger and hand gestures. Gestures are a central part of Microsoft?s new operating system (see ?The Woman Charged with Making Windows 8 Succeed?), and it is plausible that some people may find them easier to perform using their fingers in the air than with a mouse.

Leap Motion has impressed journalists and gadget fans with in-person and online demonstrations of its technology, but its biggest challenge will be persuading software developers to add gestural controls to their applications. Without that, people that do buy a Leap Motion device will have little they can do with it.

The deal with Asus, one of the world?s largest PC manufacturers, could help. ?We want developers to feel confident that there?s going to be a significant market around Leap,? says Buckwald. His company plans to operate an app store where users can buy, and developers can sell, LeapMotion-enabled software. By the time the Asus-Leap bundles reach consumers, a first wave of apps will be available, says Buckwald.

The Leap device is roughly the size of a pack of gum: three inches long, one inch wide and half an inch thick. One side is black glass, under which are two small cameras and a handful of infrared LEDs gather the data needed to track fingers to an accuracy of one hundredth of a millimeter.

Buckwald says that the same functionality could be added to even smaller devices. ?Even today, it is possible to put Leap into a tablet or smartphone,? he says, by using smaller sensors. ?The accuracy and power will stay the same.?

Leap also announced a new round of investment funding, taking the total raised by the company from $15 million to $45 million. ?The main reason was to support a very dramatic ramping up in our manufacturing,? says Buckwald.

Escaping from the Dangers of Childhood Obesity

Escape from Childhood ObesityTeaching children about the benefits of exercise and eating nutritiously is something that must be done by example in order to escape the dangers inherent to childhood obesity.

Children follow behavior that is modeled by their parents and the authority figures around them. Children must learn at an early age the benefits of not being obese.

Many of the things we like or dislike doing are just done out of habit. You teach your kids about the benefits of eating nutritious fruits and vegetables and to have an active lifestyle for their good health. They will, of course, make their own decisions as adults but the childhood training that you provide when they are children will set the stage for good habits for the rest of their lives

One of the worst things that you can do is to have your children see that you don?t follow your own advice. This goes for your overall lifestyle not just exercise and eating a good diet. If you smoke, for example, it?s alright to tell your kids that they shouldn?t smoke. But in order to avoid appearing hypocritical, it would be a better to talk to them in an honest dialog about the dangers of smoking cigarettes and how you now wish that you had never started. This approach would have better benefits than just telling kids not to smoke because ?I said so?.

Getting exercise together with the kids is great for family bonding. This will start your family out on a healthy lifestyle of getting exercise that should follow them through their whole life. Get a family membership to the gym. Take a fitness class that includes the whole family.

Join a boxing class or martial arts academy together. Swimming is a family activity that burns a lot of calories. Why not just shoot some hoops in the driveway? It?s not just creating a healthy habit of getting exercise. It?s about creating happy memories for your family. Those are the memories that they?ll want to pass on to their kids.

Include the kids in the menu planning. Have them look through your healthy diet cook books to help you find nutritious recipes to try out. Teach your children how to shop at the grocery store for fruits and vegetables. This is a wonderful way to fight childhood obesity by modeling healthy behavior. Preparing a healthy salad or a low fat entree with you is a lesson that will stay with the child for life.

The best way to fight childhood obesity is through prevention. We, as parents, must be proactive and teach our kids healthy habits from their childhood. This is easier than having to undo an unhealthy mindset later. Childhood obesity is no joke. We must keep its ugly tentacles away from our families.

Using these ideas and others that you come up with will set a foundation for your kids that will set them on the path of making healthy lifestyle choices. Remember that it?s the mindset that we have to develop in order to set our families on this healthy path.

A New Year...A New You...A New Psychology? | Therapy That Works

While Positive Psychology is not exactly new (it?s been around for almost 15 years now, started by Martin Seligman, in 1998, during his APA presidency), it is still considered new to the field of psychology.? It is a new perspective on mental health that research is demonstrating, can lead to ?a new you.?

Now, will you wake up singing like Beyonc? or swimming like Michael Phelps?? Well, no, but research shows that it will make you happier.? In fact, Positive Psychology has been referred to as the ?Science of Happiness.?? The key difference between Positive Psychology and Self-help or Pop Psychology is its grounding in research. It is considered an evidence-based treatment.

So, what is Positive Psychology?

Positive Psychology is essentially the study of what is right, instead of what is wrong.? Where the main focus of traditional psychology has been on pathology, sickness, and the ?negative outliers,? what?s abnormal; Positive Psychology focuses on health, wellness, success, and happiness or in other words the ?positive outliers,? those that are functioning at the top of the curve.

Positive Psychology is interested in studying those people who are functioning best, so that we can learn from them and how to apply their skills and strategies in order to increase our own functioning.? Positive Psychology is about studying what we want to replicate, not what we want to deter or avoid.? It focuses on the positive of life and has created real world strategies to be implemented into our everyday ways of being to improve the quality of our life.

?Does this mean that Positive Psychology just ignores the negative, the down-side of life??

?Isn?t this just a Pollyana way of living??? Well, the answer is no.? Positive Psychology does not pretend that negative emotions or experiences do not exist.? It does not ignore them or say you should just look on the bright-side.? The point of Positive Psychology is balance.

As a field, we have spent so much time looking at what?s wrong; we need to also look at what?s right.?? A Positive Psychologist won?t ignore your pain or depression, but instead will also ask, when/where do you still feel joy, peace, and contentment and then look for ways that you can create that in other areas of your life.? Behavioral Psychologists have always known that what we put our attention on grows.? If you want a behavior to increase, pay attention to it, reward it even, and if you want it to decrease, ignore it.? It?s the same idea.? Put your attention on what?s positive, what?s working, and you will watch it grow.

So what does this mean for you?

You can start implementing Positive Psychology strategies right away, for yourself or with others, to improve one?s quality of life.? One such strategy started by Seligman himself and based on his research, is to write down 3 things each day that you are grateful for (3 good things).? A little tip here is to make sure when you do this exercise, be sure that it comes from your heart and not your head, its effects are greater when you really mean it.

Other strategies may include, evaluating your daily and weekly activities and finding ways to sneak in some positivity.? Do you love your morning latte??? Well, then, savor it.? Do you love walking the dog?? Make sure to make time for it.? Whatever brings happiness and joy into your life, make a conscious decision to do more of it, even if it?s only for 5 minutes.? Just putting your attention on what makes you feel good, will make you feel good.?? As Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar says, ?Appreciation, appreciates.?

How else can you experience more positivity in your life?? Take care of yourself!? These are known as positivity enablers because they allow us to soak in the benefits of our positive experiences.? They are things like, proper rest, proper exercise, and proper nutrition.

So, in short, as we begin a new year, look at your life, see what is right now and act on it, create more of it, and celebrate all that is working well for you.

Many Blessings in the New Year,
