Court Rules Software Not Protected By Fed Crime Laws, Overturns Conviction of Goldman Engineer

Before leaving Goldman Sachs to earn a millionaire?s salary with Chicago High Frequency Trading (HFT) startup Teza Technologies, Sergey Aleynikov made one last transaction. At 5:20pm on his last day, just before his going-away party, Aleynikov uploaded 500,000 lines of encrypted source code from the Wall Street firm's proprietary HFT system to a server located in Germany. Following the clandestine upload, Aleynikov deleted the encryption program, wiped his command history, and headed to the party. Although Aleynikov later managed to download the source code to his home computer in New Jersy before flying to Chicago, he was apprehended by the FBI while returning through Newark Liberty International Airport. But after his conviction at trial and imprisonment during the appeals process (his dual US-Russian citizenship presented a flight risk), Aleynikov is now a free man. Apple Releases Mac Flashback Trojan Removal Tool

Apple has now released a tool that removes the Flashback Trojan from infected Mac computers, according to a security update posted to Apple.com on Thursday. The malicious software, which some have casually referred to as the "Mac virus," (even though, yes, we know, a Trojan is not a virus), had previously infected some 650,000 Mac laptops, making it one of the largest infections the Mac install base has ever seen.

New treatments that combat the growing problem of antibiotic resistance by disarming rather than killing bacteria may be on the horizon, according to a new study. Published in Nature Structure and Molecular Biology, research led by Monash University showed a protein complex called the Translocation and Assembly Module (TAM), formed a type of molecular pump in bacteria. The TAM allows bacteria to shuttle key disease-causing molecules from inside the bacterial cell where they are made, to the outside surface, priming the bacteria for infection...

Chocolate, vanilla or pot? Ice cream truck driver busted

A Waldorf, Md., man faces charges after being busted for allegedly selling drugs out of an ice cream truck.

After receiving a tip through Crime Solvers, Charles County sheriff?s deputies found bags of marijuana and a stash of cash in a truck operated by 20-year-old Alexander Hoskins, authorities said.

?Ice cream or marijuana, you can take your pick with this guy,? said Diane Richardson, of the Charles County Sheriff?s Office.

Police stopped the truck at Bayswater Court and Sheffield Circle. They found the marijuana and cash in Hoskins?s underwear.

He apparently had been dealing from the truck for some time, according to the Charles County Sheriff?s Office.

?We wish we got that call just a bit sooner so we could have found more drugs, but what we did find was significant enough to show that he had been dealing it, and for us, we?re removing a drug dealer off the streets,? Richardson said.

Hoskins was selling to teens and young adults through word of mouth, authorities said.

He was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

Hoskins is out on bond and out of business, authorities said. He won?t be selling ice cream again anytime soon.
